Inflation rate rises on new HST

The following is excerpted from the 20 August 2010 edition of “theglobeandmail.com” New harmonized sales taxes in some provinces pushed up Canada's inflation rate last month — but the increase was still softer than what many economists had forecast. Canada's annual inflation rate rose by eight-tenths of a point in July to 1.8 per cent. Month-to-month, the consumer price index rose half a percentage point from May.

QST on Imported Goods and Services

The recent implementation of HST in Ontario and British Columbia has resulted in many questions from members regarding the application of the Quebec Sales Tax (QST). Most goods and services in Quebec are subject to GST and\or QST. The GST is calculated on the selling price at a rate of 5%, and the QST is calculated on the selling price ( including the GST) at the rate of 7.5%. Note that the QST is scheduled to increase in January 2011 to 8.5%.
