Port of Montreal lockout to end Saturday

The following is from today's edition of "montrealgazette.com". Longshoremen will return to work Saturday morning at the Port of Montreal, ending a lockout that has idled Canada's second largest port since Monday. Union president Daniel Tremblay said his members voted unanimously Friday to accept the back-to-work protocol negotiated with the help of a federal mediator Thursday night. Both the union, representing about 850 longshoremen and women, and the employer have agreed to stop pressure tactics and to begin intensive contract negotiations.

WTO report calls for more cooperation among governments in natural resource trade

Trading in natural resources creates a great many challenges both for importing and exporting countries and governments need to cooperate more intensively if these challenges are to be adequately addressed, according to WTO economists. Director-General Pascal Lamy said: “I believe not only that there is room for mutually beneficial negotiating trade-offs that encompass natural resources trade, but also that a failure to address these issues could be a recipe for growing tension in international trade relations”.

Additional Information on Import Permit and Export Certificate

As of September 1, importers and exporters of cattle, bison and sheep will be asked to provide their Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) or Agri-Traçabilité Québec (ATQ) database account number on animal health export certificates and import permits.

Longshoremen and employers reach agreement

The following is from today's edition of "montrealgazette.com". Montreal's longshoremen and the Maritime Employers Association have come to an agreement to end the lock-out at Montreal's harbour. The city's 900-plus dock workers are expected to return to work on Saturday morning. "It's very good for us and for the people of Montreal and for the businesses," said Daniel Tremblay, president of the longshoremen's union, CUPE Local 375.

CBSA Outage Contingency Plan - Highway

On July 19, CBSA experienced an outage and were unable to process all EDI traffic. As a result, the CSCB System Outage Contingency Plan - Highway Mode, was invoked. The CSCB would like to hear from members about their experience with the contingency plan, and if it proved to be a viable alternative to EDI during an outage. CBSA Message: Release Processing Disruptions - Marine Port of Montreal

The following message is from CBSA (EDI10-066). As a result of recent disruptions at the marine port of Montréal, marine vessels may be diverted to another marine port. Importers and brokers are encouraged to review any recently transmitted release transactions for shipments imported via the marine mode through the marine port of Montréal.

Softwood Lumber interim quota allocations for AUGUST 2010 are now available in EICS. Please be advised that the volume available currently represents 80% of the actual August allocation.

Ministers Day and Baird tour port facilities in British Columbia

The following is excerpted from the 20 July 2010 news release by Transport Canada. Today the Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Canada’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister John Baird concluded their tour of port facilities in Kitimat and Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Construction begins on Route 1 gateway project

The following is a 20 July 2010 news release by Communications New Brunswick. Construction began today on the Route 1 gateway project - the largest financial highway undertaking in New Brunswick history. Transportation Minister Denis Landry, New Brunswick Southwest MP Greg Thompson and Harry Varjabedian, project manager, Dexter Construction Co. Ltd., participated in a groundbreaking ceremony in St. George.

Earlier today, members of CBSA’s Border Commercial Consultative Committee participated on a call concerning the Agency’s recent Strategic Review. During the Review a significant number of CBSA program were reviewed in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness, their correspondence to Government of Canada priorities and their relation to core federal responsibilities.
