Negotiations between the Port of Montreal's Maritime Employers Association (MEA) and the longshoremen's union (CUPE), representing employees who operate the marine terminals, have broken down. The union issued 72-hour strike notice on July 9. On July 18, the MEA enacted their right to lock out the workers, effective 0800 Monday, July 19.
Labour dispute shuts Port of Montreal

The following is excerpted from the 19 July 2010 edition of "globeandmail.com". Commercial operations at the Port of Montreal slid to a halt Monday after the Maritime Employers Association ordered a lockout at Canada’s second-largest port. About 98 per cent of the port’s operations are affected, a spokesman for the association said. The only exception is the grain silos, which are run by the port itself and not affected by the lockout.

All bonded highway carriers transporting in-bond commercial freight destined for clearance at the Halifax, N.S. port should report to this highway sufferance warehouse.

External Power Supplies and Standby Power

NRCan has published a notice that clarifies proposed regulations for External Power Supplies and Standby Power. The proposed regulations were pre-published on June 12, 2010, in Part I of the Canada Gazette. If the regulations are published as proposed, all products manufactured after July 1, 2010, are regulated products that must comply with the regulations if they are imported or cross provincial borders for the purposes of sale of lease.
