Inflation rate rises on new HST

The following is excerpted from the 20 August 2010 edition of “theglobeandmail.com” New harmonized sales taxes in some provinces pushed up Canada's inflation rate last month — but the increase was still softer than what many economists had forecast. Canada's annual inflation rate rose by eight-tenths of a point in July to 1.8 per cent. Month-to-month, the consumer price index rose half a percentage point from May.

QST on Imported Goods and Services

The recent implementation of HST in Ontario and British Columbia has resulted in many questions from members regarding the application of the Quebec Sales Tax (QST). Most goods and services in Quebec are subject to GST and\or QST. The GST is calculated on the selling price at a rate of 5%, and the QST is calculated on the selling price ( including the GST) at the rate of 7.5%. Note that the QST is scheduled to increase in January 2011 to 8.5%.

Imported Food Sector Regulatory Proposal

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is seeking feedback on a regulatory proposal to enhance import controls. Imported food products in the Non Federally Register Sectors (NFRS) are affected. These goods include all food and food ingredients regulated solely under the Food and Drugs Act and account for 70% of the food products available in the Canadian marketplace. CBSA has asked the BCCC AMPS subcommittee to review AMPS contravention C274 and to look at ways for securing the timeframes for release of goods in order to achieve a greater level of compliance. On July 26, 2010, Prime Minister Harper made a statement announcing that Canada is imposing sanctions on Iran under the Special Economic Measures Act. These sanctions are in addition to existing sanctions passed under the United Nations Act.
